Michael Hellen > Tableau Activity Log
Background
Tableau is a data visualization platform that allows authors to create rich, interactive dashboards so that viewers can consume the data in a visual format.
Problem statement
Customers wanted a way to send event data logs directly to their own data stores which would allow them to get more timely data about the current state of their Tableau environment to address any concerns. Initially, we will only allow Amazon S3 bucket configuration, but plan to expand to more options in the near future.
Design considerations
Understand how to configure Amazon S3 buckets to accept the event data stream and design to those requirements.
Provide the appropriate amount of messaging about the state of their configuration from within Tableau.
AWS S3 configuration flow
Before moving forward with design I created a flow to better understand the steps needed to configure an AWS S3 bucket. This was reviewed with PMs and engineers until we had full understanding of the technical requirements.
Wireframe explorations
After understanding the steps required for AWS S3 configuration, I then broke out the flow and created wireframes for each use case. These were reviewed with PMs and engineering to ensure we captured the flows accurately.
Prototype
I also created an interactive prototype to illustrate how the user could navigate through the feature.
UX flow
Along with continuing to support engineers through development of this feature, I also created a UX flow with wireframes to help them see the design in an exploded view.
