Michael Hellen > Amazon Whispercast
Problem statement
Schools, businesses and government agencies had a need to purchase digital Kindle in bulk and distribute to multiple accounts, but the Kindle Store doesn’t support this since it’s intended to be more individual consumer oriented. This is why Whispercast was created. Not only should it allow purchasing of content but it should also allow users to seamlessly manage the licenses, devices and accounts with one tool.
Design considerations
Education is our primary target audience who are likely to be teachers with little support from IT and little time to spend in the Whispercast tool.
Content purchases should be simplified by not requiring a device until the educator chooses to assign them to a student.
Normally, an individual consumer’s Kindle account is associated with their email, but this may pose a challenge with bulk content and device management.
Account management
The account management screen is where the bulk of the user interaction will take place. After exploring different models I ended up creating the layout based on iTunes and various email apps for its ability to communicate several pieces of content in a set screen size. This was reviewed with the business and tested on the New York City School District. Once validated I created a visual mockup.
Tiered admins
Schools looking to use the Whispercast program needed a way to add teachers as admins. With tiered admins each teacher could become an admin for their own set of classes. First I created an invite admin flow.
After confirming the flow with the business I then created mockups to show the interaction with visuals.
Reading activity
Teachers wanted insight regarding their students’ reading progress so they could provide extra support for struggling readers. I set out to design this feature to allow teachers to see class progress, as well as view more details for each student.
Student view
Selecting an individual student in the dropdown will reveal reading progress over time in comparison to the rest of the class.
